No mistake, the Acura TL is a great car and the Navi unit is a good navigational GPS. The unit features an easy to read 7 inch touch panel lcd display, speech recognition, hands-free support for bluetooth capable cell phones, 50 user programable locations, and more.
A DVD player in the trunk contains the a disc with the Navi application. The disk must be loaded in the player for the navigational system. The DVD player also contains a PCMCIA card slot, but the PC card appears to only be usable by Acura for logging data.
By comparison, the TomTom One Version 3 is very small with only a 3.5" touchscreen display. The TomTom provides all of the basic features needed to navigate between locations. These features include route planning, identifying nearby points of interest, adding personal favorites, automatic rerouting, and audio cues. The TomTom unit costs only about 13% as much as the Honda Navi unit.
However, the TomTom comes with one feature that puts the Navi to shame: User ability to create "Warn when near POI" messages. "Warn when near POI" is an essential feature for drivers that want to avoid traffic camera tickets. Honda should take note of this capability.
TomTom: How to Add Warn When Near POI for Traffic Camera
Adding Warn When Near POI for traffic cameras is easy:
- Step 1: Connect TomTom to computer with USB cable
- Step 2: Turn TomTom on and select yes
- Step 3: On your computer, locate and open the "TomTom" device drive.
- Step 4: Copy a Cameras.ov2 traffic camera POI file to the TomTom map directory [Computer->TomTom->USA_and_Canada]
- Step 5: Copy a speedtrap.wav traffic camera audio warning file to the TomTom sound directory [Computer->TomTom->sounds]
- Step 6: From the TomTom Device menu, select the new POI Category:
- Select Change Preferences
- Select Warn When Near POI
- Select your "Camera" POI
- Set the warning distance to 300 meters & click OK
- Select the new speedtrap warning sound & click OK
- Select Done for the Warn When Near POI screen
It is that easy!
Navi: How to Add Warn When Near POI for Traffic Camera
The built-in automotive units do not seem to provide any easy ways for users to customize their gps. As a result, the unit may become out of date very fast.
Some people are hacking their automotive navigation systems using some simple tools:
- Disassemblers [IDA Pro, ollydbg]
- Navi Specific [Navi Console, DumpNavi]
- Guides [Alpine Navi Hacks]
In-dash GPS: Options for Your Vehicle:
- Eclipse AVN2210P mkII provides a detachable docking station for a TomTom!!!
- TravelPilot EX-V
- Pioneer AVIC-Z2
- Kenwood DNX7100 [User Manual], [Installation Manual]
- ARKON Swivel Mount (not quite in-dash)
Directions for creating your own POI files are available at the bottom of the distance calculator tool article. Good luck!
