The new Asus Eee PC series is a great computer for school and travel. At less than $350 for a complete system, the Asus Eee PC is a bargain. That bargain price includes OpenOffice portable software that is compatible Microsoft Office. The Asus Eee PC also provides wireless access and email support.
However, the user's manual is not the best. If you are not familiar with Linux, setting up email accounts and wireless network setting can be difficult.
How Setup Wireless Internet Access
All wireless access setup can be accomplished by using the "Network" icon. Only use the "Wireless Networks" icon for access points that do not require passwords. The following steps can be used to setup your system:
- Turn Wifi On: Turn on the wireless WiFi via the keyboard by simultaneously pressing the Fn and F2 keys. The blue light on the front of the computer will be lighted when the wireless is on. To turn the wireless off, press the Fn and F2 keys again.
- Configure Wireless Access
• From the "Internet" tab, select the "Network" icon.
• Select "Properties" on the "Zyxel Wireless Connection". (Your connection may show a disabled or pending status rather than enabled.)
• Verify "Start Mode" is set to On Boot
"Depends On" pulldown is blank.
• From the "Wireless" tab, set access points SSID and encryption settings.
• Select "Properties" on the "Local Area Connection".
• Set the "Depends On" status to "Zyxel Wireless Connection" (This will force the wireless to start if ethernet cable is not connected)
• Your wireless access configuration is complete. (You can manually turn the lan & wireless connections on/off using the pulldown.)
- Configure Email Access
• From the "Work" tab, select the "Mail" icon.
• From the "Edit" tab, select "Account Settings".
• Enter your internet username and provider "pop" address.
(Note: Default POP3 port is 110. Secure POP3 is 995. [80, 143,585, 993])
• Enter your internet username and provider "smtp" address.
(Note: In this case I am using a different provider for sending mail)
(Note: The default port is 25. SSL use port 465 and TLS uses 587.)
